Excellence is Ageless 10th Anniversary Gala Raises Record Funds for Benevolent Care

The Diamond Anniversary of the Excellence is Ageless Gala was celebrated with a record number of attendees at Heinz Field on April 26, raising $280,000 for benevolent care, which supports residents who have outlived their financial resources.

This year’s honoree was Rev. Donald J. McCoid, Bishop Emeritus of the Southwestern Pennsylvania synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and executive for Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations, ELCA.

Fifty thousand dollars for benevolent care was donated “in honor and tribute to Bishop Donald J. McCoid in recognition of his lifelong dedication and service to Christ and His church” by an anonymous foundation.

“His lifetime commitment to God, ecumenical and inter-faith relations nationally and internationally, service as a Synod bishop in Pittsburgh for 20 years, social services and ministries with people of all races, religions and ages serves as an inspiration to us all,” said Stephen D’Angelo, Gala chairman, and CEO and president of dck worldwide, signature sponsor of the Gala.

Bishop McCoid said he is grateful to Lutheran SeniorLife for treating some of his own family members with great respect. “It is a transforming place, a place of love and care,” he said.

The Excellence is Ageless Award was presented by the Rev. Sandra Kessinger, senior pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean, Va., and former assistant to Bishop McCoid.

David Fenoglietto, president and CEO of Lutheran SeniorLife, explained the initiatives being taken to further meet the needs of our elders. “Lutheran SeniorLife is changing the model of long-term care to ensure that each person lives with dignity and respect, and experiences an Abundant Life® for all their years. And for those we are serving at home, we want to help them remain at home,” he said. He then invited the 600 attendees to view ‘New Beginnings,’ a short video showcasing some of Lutheran SeniorLife’s residents and programs.

“As you can clearly see,” Fenoglietto said, “Lutheran SeniorLife is dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults and helping each and every person live a full and abundant life.”

D’Angelo echoed this commitment to the Lutheran SeniorLife mission. “Every year, Lutheran SeniorLife provides nearly $3 million in benevolent care and subsidies to residents who no longer have the resources for their care. Lutheran SeniorLife is committed to never asking someone to leave. This is their home.”

One highlight of the evening included a silent auction that featured several pieces of original art created by Passavant Retirement Community residents, employees, and even a few board members.

The invocation was given by The Rev. Martin M. Roth, interim senior pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh. A benediction, given by the The Rev. Kurt F. Kusserow, bishop of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, closed the evening.

Lutheran SeniorLife wishes to extend its appreciation to everyone who supported the 2013 Excellence is Ageless Gala. Special thanks to the following sponsors for their generous support:
