The Good LIFE February 2025

This February, our LIFE Programs have been filled with activities that bring joy and foster connections, from Valentine’s Day celebrations to enjoying s’mores outside. At LIFE Armstrong County, participants enjoyed a taste of summer in February and learned about heart-healthy eating. LIFE Beaver County celebrated a special 90th birthday with music and a sweet surprise, while LIFE Butler County hosted a Sweetheart Social and some friendly Groundhog Races. Meanwhile, LIFE Lawrence County participants crafted handmade roses, created sweet treats, and even tried their hand at Cupid’s archery.

Through these special moments, our LIFE communities continue to foster connection, joy, and a sense of belonging for all.

Chasing Away the Winter Blues: LIFE Armstrong County Brings Summer to February

While winter’s chill settled outside, LIFE Armstrong County brought a taste of summer warmth both indoors and out. Staff and participants gathered to enjoy a timeless tradition: making s’mores to lift spirits and chase away the seasonal blues.

For some, the warm glow of an electric s’mores maker offered the perfect way to enjoy this classic treat without braving the cold. However, for a few adventurous individuals, the spirit of summer meant bundling up and heading outside to enjoy a nice fire. Dressed in warm jackets to shield them from the brisk air, participants toasted marshmallows on sticks over an open flame, creating the perfect s’more – melted chocolate and graham cracker to complement the gooey marshmallow.

As they enjoyed the sweet treats, conversations turned to fond memories—camping outside, the joy of cooking over an open fire, and the simple pleasure of embracing the great outdoors.

A Pinch of Knowledge: LIFE Armstrong County Dietitian Educates Participants on Salt Intake

At LIFE Armstrong County, a bag of salt became a powerful lesson in nutrition. Dietitian Maya Azad captured participants’ attention with an eye-opening presentation on sodium intake, breaking down the hidden salts in everyday foods and offering practical alternatives for a heart-healthy diet.

A visual demonstration of daily sodium recommendations—measured out in a clear bag—brought the message home, showing just how much salt is consumed versus what is truly needed. Azad’s interactive session featured low-sodium chips, homemade dips, and low-sodium soups, allowing participants to taste the difference while learning how to make smarter choices.

The session left a lasting impression, empowering participants with the knowledge and the tools to take control of their nutrition. Thanks to Azad’s expertise and engaging approach, reducing sodium never tasted so good.

A Sweet Surprise: LIFE Beaver County’s Frank Evans Celebrates 90th Birthday with Song and Fried Ice Cream

For LIFE Beaver County participant Frank Evans, turning 90 wasn’t just another birthday—it was a celebration filled with laughter, authentic Mexican food, and a surprise serenade at El Paso Mexican Grill.

Evans and seven of his close LIFE Beaver County participant friends joined him for a special outing, during which they dined on chips and salsa and some delicious Mexican entrees.

After their meal, Evans’ face lit up with surprise as the restaurant staff approached his table, singing Happy Birthday. They presented him with a plate of fried ice cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce and crowned with whipped cream—a sweet and unexpected treat to mark his 90th birthday.

As Evans took his first bite of ice cream, he gave a big smile for the camera.

Love Blooms at LIFE Butler County’s Sweetheart Social

Valentine’s Day at LIFE Butler County was special, with participants celebrating love, friendship, and the joy of togetherness at the center’s Sweetheart Social.

Walking into LIFE Butler County Center, participants are immediately greeted by Barbara Welsh, the Administrative Assistant with a talent for making every holiday feel special. Her Valentine’s decorations at her desk aren’t just festive—they create an environment of warmth and welcome. But it’s not just about what’s on the walls—it’s about the feeling you get when you step inside the center—like you’re among family.

Among those celebrating were Albina and Dave Deriggi, a couple whose love story has stood the test of time. Married for 47 years and have known each other for 50, their bond of love is as strong as it was on the first day they met, and they have now created a lifetime of memories together.

The celebration featured delicious Cherry Blossom Cups and refreshing mocktails as participants relaxed, socialized, and enjoyed these Valentine’s Day-themed treats while sharing stories and laughter. There was also a photo shoot, including one where participants could pose with a fun prop—a giant Queen of Hearts card with a cut-out face.

In today’s fast-paced world, sometimes taking a moment to slow down, celebrate, and be together is what we need. At LIFE Butler County, we believe in creating spaces where love, friendship, and happiness thrive—not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day.

“Well, it’s Groundhog Day… again!”

LIFE Butler County decided one groundhog prediction wasn’t enough (or maybe just wasn’t right—winter? No thanks!). So, they took matters into their own hands with the ultimate decider of fate: Groundhog Races!

LIFE Butler participants put their faith in their furry champions, rolling dice to scurry forward, then back again. 12 spaces out, 12 spaces back—Kind of like a groundhog debating if it’s really worth leaving its burrow when its cold.

Did the winning groundhog see its shadow? Hard to say. But we did see a whole lot of fun, cheering, and competitive spirit.

Until next year… or maybe tomorrow… or maybe tomorrow…

From Handmade Roses to Sweet Treats: LIFE Lawrence County Celebrates Valentine’s Day in Unique Ways

At LIFE Lawrence County, we understand that love extends beyond heart-shaped cards and chocolates. We believe that every moment is an opportunity to bring joy, connection, and a sense of belonging to those we serve. This Valentine’s Day, our community came together to celebrate the spirit of love and friendship.

Participant Donna M. led by example, crafting beautiful handmade roses for every participant— a symbol of friendship and appreciation. What an amazingly special gesture.

But what’s Valentine’s Day without something sweet? Participants got creative in making homemade ice cream sandwiches and chocolate-covered pretzels—a delicious labor of love enjoyed by all.

And then, Cupid made an appearance—well, several Cupids, actually. Participants embraced the role of love’s favorite archer, taking aim at heart-shaped targets with toy arrows.

Love is best expressed not just in words, but in the small, meaningful gestures that leave a lasting impact. Whether through a handmade rose, a shared dessert, or a perfectly aimed arrow, this Valentine’s Day at LIFE Lawrence County shows us that love isn’t just something we celebrate—it’s something we live every day.
