Giving Back, Baking From Scratch and Staying Busy at Benbrook Place

There’s been a little bit of everything happening at Benbrook Place Personal Care Community lately.

Residents packed nine backpacks for local students. The Benbrook Baking Club made cream puffs from scratch. A week later, they were back at it with homemade biscotti.

They may seem like very different activities, but together they say quite a bit about the kind of place Benbrook is.

It had been many years since these residents had a first day of school of their own. But when they had the opportunity to help local children get ready for theirs, they knew exactly what to do.

They filled nine backpacks with folders, markers, 24-count boxes of crayons, colored pencils, scissors, Elmer’s glue, pencil sharpeners and water bottles — the things students will actually use once they walk into the classroom.

The first day of school comes with enough nerves. Having the supplies you need is one less thing to worry about.

A short time later, the residents got to see where their work had gone.

The Butler YMCA sent Benbrook Place photos from its Back to School Giveaway, along with a note of thanks for the residents and staff who helped make it a success.

“Thank you so much for the support from residents and staff! You helped make this year’s Back to School Giveaway such a success!” wrote Allison Whelan, Membership Coordinator at the Butler YMCA, in an email to Lutheran SeniorLife.

Seeing those backpacks make their way from a table at Benbrook Place into the hands of local children made the project that much more meaningful.

And while residents have been finding ways to support their community, they’ve also been finding plenty of reasons to spend time together.

The Benbrook Baking Club is a good example.

First came cream puffs.

They made every last one from scratch. They mixed, piped, filled and drizzled their way through the process, with everyone taking part along the way.

The result looked like something you’d expect to see in a bakery.

And apparently, one successful afternoon wasn’t enough.

The following week, the Baking Club gathered again, this time to make biscotti.

Some received a white drizzle, others chocolate, and once again the finished product looked every bit as good as the effort that went into making it.

We’re starting to think these ladies have been holding out on us. At this rate, the Benbrook Baking Club is going to need its own display case.
