LIFE Beaver Participants Ride Toward Better Health with New NuStep

A new piece of exercise equipment at the LIFE Beaver County Center is helping older adults stay active, engaged, and motivated, thanks to a generous donation from the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation Impact Fund.

When one of the two NuStep recumbent cross-trainers at the Center broke down beyond repair, staff and participants alike felt the loss of a vital part of their daily wellness routines. With support from the Foundation, a brand-new NuStep was purchased, and it’s already making a difference.

“The NuStep is more than just a piece of fitness equipment, it’s a lifeline for many of our participants,” said Leslie Kisow, Executive Director of Community LIFE and Programs. “It allows them to regain strength, stay independent, and enjoy low-impact cardiovascular exercise in a safe and engaging way. The new machine adds an entirely new dimension to their experience.”

The new NuStep model includes an interactive screen with virtual scenery, allowing users to simulate bike rides through cities and landscapes across the globe. Participants can now enjoy immersive rides through destinations like Brussels or snowy mountain villages—all from the safety of the LIFE Center.

Kathy Adams, the first participant to try out the new machine, said she enjoys the variety. “It makes exercising fun again,” she shared.

Dolores Slappy, another regular user, said she loves biking through Belgium virtually. “It’s like a mini vacation,” she said with a laugh. Michael Shoats agreed. “The snowy scenes are my favorite. It really feels like you’re there, it’s so cool!”

The purchase was made possible through the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation’s Impact Fund, which supports programs and resources that enhance the lives of seniors.

“This is exactly the kind of difference our donors make,” said Jane Bittcher, President of the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation. “Every gift to the Impact Fund goes directly toward improving the health, happiness, and independence of those we serve. Seeing the joy this new NuStep brings to participants is what it’s all about.”

The LIFE Beaver County Center continues to serve as a hub of care and community for older adults, offering medical support, nutritious meals, social activities, and wellness opportunities all under one roof. Thanks to community support and ongoing investments, participants will continue to benefit from the kind of care that not only sustains them, but helps them thrive.
