Passavant Community Strengthens Dementia Care with New Training Initiative

Passavant Community is deepening its commitment to person-centered dementia care through the continued growth of its Montessori inspired philosophy, thanks to critical funding from the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation and the WEDNetPA training grant.

Originally launched several years ago, the Montessori philosophy at Passavant has become a cornerstone of care in several memory care households, known as Montessori Centers for Excellence. These centers focus on helping individuals with dementia live meaningful, purpose-filled lives by promoting independence, self-worth, and engagement with their home and community.

“The Montessori philosophy has transformed the way we care for residents with dementia,” said Laura Roy, Executive Director of Lutheran SeniorLife Passavant Community. “We are no longer focused only on managing symptoms. Instead, we’re creating opportunities for our residents to participate, contribute, and thrive. This approach affirms each person’s dignity and unique abilities, no matter where they are on their memory care journey.”

To maintain the highest quality of care, continued training is essential. A new three-day workshop was recently developed to provide current staff with updated techniques and practices and to introduce new team members to the Montessori approach. The training sessions reached more than 150 employees, ensuring a consistent and compassionate standard of care across the community.

Funding for the training was made possible through a combination of resources, including support from the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation’s Impact Fund and a grant from the state’s WEDNetPA training program.

“Investing in staff education is one of the most meaningful ways we can support our mission,” said Jane Bittcher, President of the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation. “Thanks to our generous donors, the Foundation was able to help fund this important training. Their contributions directly impact the lives of our residents and the professionals who care for them every day.”

With ongoing training and strong community support, the Montessori Centers for Excellence at Passavant Community continue to set a high standard for compassionate, person-directed dementia care—ensuring that every resident can experience purpose, connection, and joy.
