Installation of Bishop Melissa L. Stoller Marks a New Chapter for the Southwestern PA Synod

On October 18th at Berkley Hills Lutheran Church, The Rev. Melissa L. Stoller was formally installed as Bishop of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)—becoming the first woman ever to serve in this role.

Elected on June 13 and beginning her term on September 1, 2025, Bishop Stoller brings a legacy of faithful leadership and service—from her years as Director for Evangelical Mission and Assistant to the Bishop, to her pastoral ministry across Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and abroad.

The installation service, presided over by ELCA Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry, was a profound celebration of calling, community, and continuity. In a moment rich with tradition, Bishop Emeritus Kurt Kusserow presented Bishop Stoller with the pectoral cross and crozier, marking the sacred transfer of leadership before Bishop Curry presented her to the people.

On behalf of Lutheran SeniorLife, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Bishop Stoller on this historic and faith-filled milestone. Her leadership, vision, and devotion to serving others embody the very heart of our shared mission to continue Christ’s healing ministry of love, compassion, and hope.

We look forward to partnering in faith and purpose under her inspired guidance.
