Benbrook Place Presentation Helps Seniors Recognize Scams

Residents and guests at Benbrook Place recently gathered for an educational presentation focused on helping older adults recognize and avoid scams targeting seniors.

The program, titled “Slam the Scam,” was presented by Rachel Kirschner, Vice President of Insurance Services of Zelienople, and Scott Bartlett, a Licensed Insurance Broker. The presentation highlighted common Medicare and government-related scams, along with practical ways older adults can protect their personal information and finances.

During the presentation, Kirschner and Bartlett explained how scammers often pose as representatives from Medicare, Social Security, law enforcement agencies or insurance companies. They warned attendees about high-pressure tactics, misleading advertisements, fake phone calls and requests for sensitive information such as Medicare numbers, banking information or gift cards.

“Knowledge is your best defense,” Bartlett told attendees, encouraging residents to slow down, ask questions and verify information before responding to unsolicited calls or messages.

The presenters also discussed how scammers are increasingly using technology and artificial intelligence to target seniors, including voice-cloning scams involving family members and fraudulent text messages requesting payment for tolls or fines.

Attendees learned several important tips to help protect themselves, including:

  • Never share Medicare or Social Security information with unknown callers
  • Be cautious of urgent requests demanding immediate action
  • Ignore requests for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers
  • Create secure accounts through Medicare.gov and SocialSecurity.gov
  • Verify insurance information directly with trusted local professionals

The event also provided an opportunity for residents and guests to learn more about Medicare enrollment periods, insurance marketing regulations and the importance of working with trusted advisors.
