See the Possibilities with Visual Rehabilitation

Are conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy making everyday tasks seem impossible? Do routines like cooking, driving and taking medications have you in a blur? If so, Lutheran SeniorLife’s visual rehabilitation program can help.

Our highly trained, and specialized, therapists are ready to assist patients in using their remaining vision to maintain independence. Similarly, patients are often amazed by how much visual rehabilitation can transform their quality of life. Here are eight tips to digest before giving us a call:

  1. Remove clutter, cords and throw rugs to avoid falls.
  2. Use contrasting colors such as a grab bar on a different colored wall, a dark bathmat with rubber backing on a light floor, and white sheets with a dark comforter and pillows so you can see items more prominently.
  3. Turn pan handles inward from the stove to avoid spills and burns.
  4. Ask for items such as medication labels to be provided in large print.
  5. Mark pill bottles in a distinctive way to identify them more easily (i.e. attach Velcro, a rubber band, etc. to distinguish one from another.)
  6. Use shades on light sources to reduce glares.
  7. Invest in assistive technology, such as an e-reader, to adjust the font size, lighting level and contrast of text.
  8. Ask your doctor about driving with low vision conditions to determine your level of need.
