13th Annual Excellence is Ageless Gala Raises Record Amount for Benevolent Care

More than 575 friends, sponsors, business partners, residents and staff members of Lutheran SeniorLife attended the 13th annual Excellence is Ageless Gala on April 29 at Heinz Field.

The generosity of many helped make this the most successful Gala to date, as more than $240,000 was raised for benevolent care, which supports our residents who have outlived their financial resources.

This year’s honoree was Dr. R. Bruce Bickel, retired senior vice president and managing director, Private Foundation Management Services Hawthorn PNC Financial Services Group. The Excellence is Ageless award is given to an individual age 55 or older who has made significant contributions to the community through profession, service, philanthropy or leadership.

A long-time supporter of Lutheran SeniorLife’s mission, Dr. Bickel said that to be ‘excellent,’ one must be humble, grateful and respectful.

“We must respect the elderly,” he said in his remarks. “If you don’t respect the elderly, you will never learn from their wisdom.”

Part of respecting our elderly includes helping them live an Abundant Life®. Each year, Lutheran Senior Life provides nearly $3M in benevolent care and subsidies to make that happen.

Some of the evening’s proceeds were generated through a silent auction featuring several pieces of original art created by friends, residents and staff.

David Fenoglietto, president and CEO of Lutheran SeniorLife, thanked supporters for their generosity and stressed the importance of benevolent care.

“The mission of Lutheran SeniorLife is to enrich the lives of older adults in a faith-based environment so that they can enjoy the abundance of life regardless of their physical condition or financial circumstances,” he said.

“Lutheran SeniorLife is committed to never asking someone to leave their home at Lutheran SeniorLife because of lack of resources,” said Greg Jordan, Gala chairman, executive vice president and general counsel of PNC Financial Services Group. “The need for support, financial and otherwise, has grown along with Lutheran SeniorLife. Tonight we celebrate and support all those who are touched by their great programs.”
