Lutheran SeniorLife is once again expanding its services for older adults with the addition of a new independent living apartment building on the St. John campus on Route 228 in Mars.

The 53-unit one- and two-bedroom apartment building will offer its residents a maintenance free lifestyle, and feature a dining room, multipurpose room, several areas for socialization and even underground parking for some units.

A new bus is making its rounds through Zelienople, Cranberry and all through the Passavant Retirement Community campus, thanks to generous donations from the PRC Auxiliary and residents.

Passavant Retirement Community already had two buses in circulation, but needed a third bus to drive on resident pleasure trips and appointments in the Cranberry and North Hills areas.

Thirteen residents were invited to participate in the bus selection process.

The Fitness and Wellness Center at Passavant Retirement Community has instituted a new, in-home program called Healthy Connections that will help residents learn to live more abundantly by enriching their lives through wellness services.

Some of the available services include personal training and exercise, stress relief, health and wellness education and consultations, memory-enhancing games, leisure activities and music therapy.

“We started the program to address the needs of those residents who don’t, or are unable to, engage in these types of activities on their own.

The dining services department at Passavant Retirement Community recently donated 548.5 pounds of food to the Lighthouse Foundation Food Pantry as part of their GIFT (Giving in Fellowship Together) Project.

Together with the residents and other staff, 371 food items including canned goods, bagged and boxed noodles, juices, snacks, candy and rice were collected.

For the past four years or more, the Caring Clowns of Passavant Retirement Community have given the gift of joy, love and laughter to residents in nursing, and to people at special events at St. John Specialty Care Center and in the community.

Now their mission, and Passavant’s, are known around the world because of an article published in the November, 2011 issue of Clowning Around magazine.

When 91-year-old Marie Holtzapfel arrived at RoseCrest Assisted Living Residence in July from another long-term care facility, she could hardly have been aware she was part of some rare vanguard in Pennsylvania.

For one thing, like all 15 initial residents in the homelike setting in Mars, Mrs. Holtzapfel has had dementia for years.

Lutheran SeniorLife and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America pioneered a Health and Wellness Ministry more than three years ago that is still going strong today.  Lori Tormey, a registered nurse and employee of Lutheran SeniorLife, coordinates the program and works out of the Synod offices in McCandless Township, in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. 

The program is a collaboration of Lutheran SeniorLife, the SWPA Lutheran Synod and the Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program of the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia among older adults. It involves the part of the brain that controls thought, memory and language, thus seriously affecting a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living.

To date, there is no cure.

Approximately 150 guests attended the St. John Specialty Care Center “Guys and Dolls” holiday fashion show earlier this month at Treesdale Golf and Country Club.

This year’s event grossed approximately $10,000. Proceeds benefit the St. John activities department and will also be used to buy holiday gifts for the residents at St. John.

Jennifer Antkowiak, news anchor with KDKA-TV, was the mistress of ceremonies.

Residents at Passavant Retirement Community have a new place to play.

Thanks to the dedication and fund-raising efforts of the Abundant LifeSMCommittee and the generosity of an anonymous donor, a new playground has been built outside the Olde Main building.

“It’s like we were given a gift from God!” said Laura Roy, executive director of Passavant Retirement Community at the dedication ceremony last month.

Passavant Retirement Community has been providing abundant lives for seniors in Zelienople and surrounding areas for more than 105 years. Within the next few weeks, an Alabama resident will also be able to live more abundantly thanks to a collaboration between Passavant and Hosannah Industries, Inc.

As part of the reconstruction project at Passavant Retirement Community, some of the existing cottages are being torn down.
