The 2011 Annual Theological Convocation for Rostered Leaders of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was held October 10-12 at the Bishop Connare Center in Greensburg.

As part of this three-day event, Lutheran SeniorLife sponsored some free time for relaxation and fellowship for the pastors, including nine holes of golf at Mt. Odin Golf Course, paraffin hand waxing and a 10-minute massage.

Todd C. Moules, regional vice president for First Niagara Financial Group, has been selected as the 2012 Lutheran SeniorLife Excellence is Ageless Gala chairman.

Moules began his career in 1988 with National City Bank. In 1998, he was named Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking, serving as deputy head of Credit Administration for the northcoast region. In 2005, he was named President of Pennsylvania Banking.

Residents at St. John Specialty Care Center were squawking over a recent educational outreach program held in Vesper Hall given by representatives from the National Aviary in Pittsburgh.

Gonzo the yellow-naped Amazon parrot, Franklin the spectacled owl and Stanley the African penguin  delighted the crowd of about 40 residents. Educators from the Aviary displayed each of the birds and shared interesting facts about each.

St. John Specialty Care Center celebrated its annual Family and Friends Fun Day in September. Each year, the carnival-like event draws more than 300 St. John employees, residents and their families for a day of music, food, games and prizes. Hosted by the Abundant Life Committee, Family and Friends Fun Day is a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational camaraderie. Some of the day’s entertainment was provided by Joe the Juggler and the Caring Clowns from Passavant Retirement Community.

More than 212 participants, ranging in age from toddlers to seniors, took part in the 7th annual Grandparent’s Race at Passavant Retirement Community in October. This year’s race featured a Triple Trot Challenge, giving  runners and walkers the choice of a 10 mile run, a 5K run or 1 mile walk/run.

Thrivent Allegheny County Chapter, Thrivent Butler County Chapter and NexTier Bank were major sponsors of this year’s event. With the help of these sponsors and participants and employees, more than $13,200 was raised to help support the benevolent care fund at Passavant.

A new personal emergency response system at Passavant Retirement Community is keeping residents safer than ever before.

The SARA (Situational Awareness and Response Assistant) system is a wireless pendant, being worn by all Passavant residents, which can be activated in the event of an emergency from anywhere on campus, both indoors and out.

There’s never a dull moment for Kitty Gehres, a resident at The Commons at Stonebrook Village.

“There’s always something going on around here,” Gehres said as she checked the pedometer she wears to keep track of the number of steps she takes per day as part of a wellness competition. She noted that by 10 a.m. she had already walked nearly two miles.

“Living at The Commons has given me the chance to do so many things,” she continued.

LIFE Lawrence County, a partnership of Lutheran SeniorLife and Heritage Valley Health System, was welcomed into the New Castle community at a grand opening celebration on July 20, offering older adults an alternative to nursing home care by managing their medical, functional and social needs.

Following a successful open house and dedication ceremony in June, RoseCrest Assisted Living began welcoming its first residents in July.

This new center, located adjacent to St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars, offers assisted living services with special programming for residents with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.

This is exactly the type of care that Marie Holtzapfel, 91, needs.

BeHome PartnersTM, the home care entity of Lutheran SeniorLife recently moved to a new location in Zelienople. The 1,100-square foot building at 317 Main Street in Zelienople provides more visibility for the program.

More than 100 people attended the opening of RoseCrest Assisted Living on the St. John Specialty Care Center campus in Mars on May 12.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will help Lutheran SeniorLife celebrate 25 years as a Social Ministry Organization with a birthday party on July 18.

Lutheran SeniorLife was formed in 1986 as Lutheran Affiliated Services, which essentially merged St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars with Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople as a Social Ministry Organization of the newly formed ELCA.

The birthday party will be held outdoors from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Synod office, 9625 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

The event raised more than $220,000 which will be used to fund Lutheran SeniorLife programs and benevolent care, ensuring that residents can continue to live abundant lives, regardless of their physical health or financial circumstances.

Six residents from St. John Specialty Care Center attended a VIP shopping spree at Dress Barn in the Cranberry Mall on April 26.

The ladies were each given a 20 percent discount on their spring clothing and jewelry purchases and were also treated to a “Mocktail Party” complete with non-alcoholic drinks, hors d’oeuvres, pastries and fresh fruit.

LIFE Beaver County recently celebrated its seventh anniversary of the program.

"We've seen so many success stories and examples of Abundant LifeSM in the seven years we have been open," said Mary Lou Harju, marketing manager for the LIFE Programs.

"In fact, our very first participant is still living in her own home with the help of our program. It is such an honor to care for these older adults and to work with their families in doing so.

Five residents from St. John Specialty Care Center entered their Five Star Chili in the Kiwanis Club of Mars Out of This World Chili Cook-Off. Through their combined culinary talents, the residents created an award winning chili recipe, capturing first place.

Residents Bob Laythe, Luella Grandstaff, Shirley Hahn, Dorothy Smarsh and Grace Dambaugh worked tirelessly the day before the event chopping, dicing, browning and stirring until their concoction finally met their standards.

On December 17, 2010, the president signed into law the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. This $858 million piece of legislation basically extends for two years tax cuts for individuals that were set to expire in 2010.

One of the provisions in this bill which is of special interest to the nonprofit community and individuals who choose to make charitable donations to those organizations, is the Charitable IRA Rollover.

Every year, one in three seniors experiences a fall which leads to devastating outcomes such as decreased mobility, functionality and independence, injury or even death. Lutheran SeniorLife recognizes this as a serious public health problem, and has recently been awarded a $19,200 grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield to begin Pathways to Balance, a fall risk screening and prevention program.

Our cornerstone locations, St. John Specialty Care Center and Passavant Retirement Community existed separately for over 100 years until 1986, when Lutheran SeniorLife, originally formed as Lutheran Affiliated Services, brought the two together.

Lutheran SeniorLife is expanding its ministry of senior care as LIFE Lawrence County prepares to open its doors on West State Street in New Castle.

Lutheran Services for the Elderly Endowment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Foundation has given Lutheran SeniorLife a $25,000 grant to help make this opening a reality.

"They have been very supportive of this effort and hope the LIFE Lawrence County model may serve other Lutheran organizations around the country," said Frances Grabowski, director of annual giving for the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation.

Passavant Retirement Community celebrated its 105th year of serving elders in Zelienople and surrounding communities in October.

Once known as The Old People’s Home of the Pittsburgh Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Passavant Retirement Community has grown from a modest 10-acre facility to the blossoming 42-acre campus it is today.

As the walls continue to go up at RoseCrest, so does the level of excitement for those involved in making the vision of an Alzheimer’s-specific assisted living facility a reality. 

According to Karen Russell, executive director of St. John Specialty Care Center, staffing for RoseCrest will begin in late winter. Lutheran SeniorLife will begin welcoming residents in the spring of 2011. 

“It’s really exciting watching the building go up,” Russell said.

Lutheran SeniorLife’s LIFE (Living Independence for the Elderly) programs have been instrumental in providing much-needed services and programs to hundreds of frail, low-income seniors in Beaver, Butler and Allegheny counties.
